89 Jimmy Digital Dash ---further questions

Ok, today I read through all 43 pages of threads, obviously there's some problems with the digital dashes...

My dash, about three months ago start flickering, but only on the spedometer and odometer. Used to just flicker, then went out and came back on, and now, totall will not come back on.

The thing is, the other instruments work fine, oil, temp, gas, voltage, all work totally properly, so its not a question of grounding.

Now second, theres only one computer in that little dash, so there's no real way it can be "half cooked", either its fried or its fine, right?

So what can be the deal?? Has anyone taken apart these jobbies? I'm gonna give it a go? But has anyone already done it?

Don't even worry about ripping them apart and fixing them.

Get the upgraded ones off of ebay and plug and play and go on enjoying your truck.

im a poor student, so my options are:

Leave it alone, and have no speedo,
Pull it apart and try and fix it,
or
Get one from a wrecker, but who knows if that one is working.......

Spending 2-3 bills on a new one is just not an option right now,

Just go to ebay and look at the options.

This is not a do it yourself job and buying a new one would be foolish seeing the rebuilt ones are on ebay.

Just at least try it before you say you can't do it.

I'm wondering if you aren't one of the sellers on ebay because I never said I couldn't do it. Infact, I think I can repair the motherboard with a little assistance.

If someone understands the workings of this board, and what components control the speedo, please let me know. I can solder a chipboard, just need to know what parts to replace.

Obviously it's not that hard............

No, you are just thinking it is a "oh there is the problem and I can fix it in a snap" kind of solution.

If you don't know what is wrong with it, how are you stating it can be fixed so easily?

I am not saying you can't do it, but for the 30-40 bucks they are selling on ebay, why go through the headache when they have it fixed in one shot.

The parts alone for the repair will cost more than the whole motherboard there.

I am just trying to let you know that this is not 5 minute fix and there are about a 100 things that can cause a digital board to go.

why i think it's an easy fix.....

1. The sellers on ebay only require you to trade the "board" which tells me its a problem on the board, not in the cluster.

2. All the components on the board are availiable for purchase via electronic distributors or the board manufacturer......and it wont cost the 40 bucks plus internation shipping for a simple part.

3. Soldering a board is not difficult, provided you have a proper iron, which i do.

4. You're absolutely right, there are alot of things on that board, which is why i need to know which ones control or have effect on ONLY the speedo, and from my knowledge of electronics, there will only be a few things on there, that are SPECIFIC to the speedo.

So I guess the answer isn't out there, or on here anyway.

I am not questioning your skill and such, I am only offering information on how to get it fixed cheaply and as fast as possible.

I am excellent on soldering and electronic work, but you are taking this repair too lightly.

It is like knowing that a certina part of a computer motherboard is not working and trying to find the one diode, resister, chip, IC that is blow.

Would take weeks worth of testing if you dno't know what you are looking for.

To boil it down, I am only trying to help you get the cluster fixed ASAP.
