aerostar running rich

have a 1992 3.0 aerostar. 90k miles. Was running great until about two months ago. When in the morning I would start it an it would surge from stalling to idle. If I accelerated for 10 seconds it would run fine the rest of the day. Last Sunday I started it
It stalled out and wouldn’t start. It starts now but the engine runs really
Rich. Black smoke out the exhaust. Does anyone know if there is a common?
Problem like this out there, that usually turns out to be the some switch.
I changed the oxygen sensor, throttle position, fuel reg value. When I start it cold
runs not bad for a minute or so then starts with the rich mixture. running out of things to replace. Going to replace the engine
computer next. Junk yard is looking to see If they have one.
I know that After everything is done ,someone will tell Oh
change this its been causing problems like this for years.

I would like to narrow it down to a few things if possible anyone have any Idea Its a good van but has a senor or something screwing things up.

thanks

I'm not sure if it could be related with the black smoke, but for the stalling, you may want to clean - or replace - the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. Reset ECU? Disconnect + terminal on battery for about 20 min?

Just make sure to not let the battery short against the body of the car, or you'll have a bigger problem.

I had something like this in my '91 aero and it turned out to be a vacuum control hose for the fuel pump, or related pressure regulator. cut my mileage by 30%.

Wierd thing is that it started right after my Mech's replaced a fuel filter and took out a dead catalytic converter. Then they spent 2-3 months going through other stuff that they thought was giving me "poor performance". Some of it was real, but they just weren't listening to me when I kept saying that the mileage had instantly dropped after they worked on the fuel filter. Finally they discovered the line and fixed it, but never copped to having pulled it off in the first place. Now I go elsewhere for mech work, or just do it myself again like in the old days. But the Aero is a bitch to work on.!!
