fuel problems with a 89 jetta
i have a 89 jetta and very confused on the problem. i have been reading around and it seems that there are 2 fuel pumps on my car. one on the top of the tank and one underneath the car by the back passenger tire. am i correct about that? anyways, the fuse blew on my fuel pump and i replaced it and it doent blow again so i dont know how that happened. there is power cables going to the fuel pump on top of the tank and then they go underneath to the other pump with another plug. if i just leave the top pump plugged in and unplug the bottom one unplugged the car starts but just idles bad. if i give it gas then it dies. if i plug in both pumps the car will not start at all and if when it is running with just the top pump plugged in and then i plug in the bottom one it dies right away. And if i leave the both plugged in and crank the engine, the plugs are wet when i take them out. is the pump shot underneath or should i be looking for something else. a couple of months ago a wire that powers the fuel injectors broke off but i fixed that and those are working properly now but it is possible that another one broke off but i didnt see anything. Any help what to look for would be appreciated very much. thank you

A blown FP fuse does indicate a failing pump motor, but I think the problem may lie elsewhere. From your description it sounds like both pumps are working, but the high presure pump (at the wheel) floods the engine when used. Normally the car wouldn't run at all with only the lift pump (tank) working. A flooding Digifant system is a sign that the ECM has been fried by a disconnected ground wire. The only other thing may be a coolant temp sensor stuck in a very cold reading.

Whoa! I just fixed this in my car. I replaced the clutch, and in doing so must have removed a ground wire and forgotten to put it back. As soon as I turned the key to the car, I heard a pop sound. It took me about five days of wondering why my car wouldn't start before I found a post about the fried ECU thing. What it does is puts the injection system into "limp home" mode, which runs the injectors at max duty cycle. This is why your plugs are wet with both pumps on. Remove your battery, get a good used ECU, make sure all your grounds are intact. She should fire up the first try.

i got a new ecu from the junkl yard and threw it in and it is still soing the same thing. how would i go about testing to make sure it is good. is there a way. do i have to hook it up to a computer or something?

does it matter what kind of ecu i get. i have a KEN in my car stock. can i get a bosch or any other kind or does it have to be the same?

I'm unfamiliar with a KEN ECU, I only know of the Bosch units. I assume you have a good spark at the plugs?

oh yeah i am getting spark and fuel to the engine. i puller the line off at the fuel injectors and i am getting gas too. so i dunno what else to check out. i dont want to spend too much on fixing it.
