4 Wheel Disc Parking Brake Repair
The Parking Brake On My 2000 Blazer Does Not Work. The Pedal Travels Easily To Near Bottom And Holds, But The Brake Does Nothing To Hold The Truck. I Have Adjusted The Cable By A Fair Amount And The Result Is Still The Same. My Haynes Manual Says That The 4 Whhell Disc Sytem Has Its Own Shoes And Drum. Advance Auto Parts Store Near Me Does Not Stock The Shoes And Did Not Know What I Was Taling About.
Before I Start I Was Looking For Some Advice On What I Might Look For. |

Re: 4 Wheel Disc Parking Brake Repair
I checked the book for my 02 blazer and it shows a set of brake pads behind the rotor on the rear wheels. The inside of the rotor acts as the drum.

I have a 99 p/u with those 4 wheel disc brakes too, the parking brake design is a bad design. The parking brake is a mini-drum in the rear disc. The parking brake shoe is a wimpy c-shape that is pushed out at the ends of the "c". You have to take the wheel off to do any adjustment (there is only a small adjustment anyway). They barely work even when nothing is wrong with them, just takes one time of forgetting they are on and they burn down and never hold again. Mine didn't work when my new truck was delivered, they had to replace the entire disc assembly because it had been overheated and the mechanism would not release. I think the delivery folks never knew the brake was on and drove the truck and there-ya-go!.
Not much you can do about it as far as I know, maybe someone else has some suggs? |

Quote:
Took off my rear rotors to look at the parking shoes. Needed to adjust the adjustment screws on both sides - 1/8 inch. Former owner must have driven the Blazer with the parking brakes on. Adjusted the cables and everything works fine - even holds on incline with accelerator applied. A hint to take off the rotor if it gets stuck on the rust area. Pull out the rotor enough to expose the adjusting wheel and reach in with a screwdriver to turn the adjusting wheel counterclockwise - this contracts the parking shoes. If you're positive the problem is not in the cable assembly, then look at your parking shoes. You might be lucky and not have to replace the shoes. There are several online parts places that will sell the shoes. |

Re: 4 Wheel Disc Parking Brake Repair
Before you start to replace the parking brake shoes, make sure the cable adjustment is totally backed off. That way you can set the shoe adjustment correctly then set the pedal adjustment with the cable.

Re: 4 Wheel Disc Parking Brake Repair
Yeah , the parking brake design ranks up there with the seatback handles that brake on EVERYONE'S Blazer. Should be a recall but wont. The driver side parking brake the pin that pushes the "C" shaped brake pad doesn't work. I haven't replaced it yet, and probably never will. But the next time I work on my rear brakes I am going to rip the thing out because it just bounces of my rotor and grinds for a second or two if I hit a bump. Plus, I have an automatic and never use the thing anyways.
