egr and carbon canister

what do the egr and carbon canisters do exactly? do i need them? by removing them would i add or remove hp.

Here are a couple of technical articles on these components/systems. Neither of these systems consume power, so it is unlikely that removing them would add power to the engine. Note that in the case of WOT, no EGR flow should occur.
