Question ABS kicking in on dry pavement?

I am hoping someone can help me. I have a 2000 Honda Passport with 99,000 miles (which has been very kind to me over the years). Over the past month it appears the anti-lock brakes have been engaging when coming to stops on dry pavement. It usually happens at 5 mph or less. I have had it to the dealer twice...but Murphy's Law always has everything working fine when I get the car there.

The guess on the ABS is my own. Could it be something else? Upon stopping (either forward ro reverse) the brake pedal seems to "push back" and shake. Also, there is this "springy" shuttery noise that happens at the same time. I have a .mov video of the sound if anyone thinks that would help to see. The dealers says that without an error code they do not even know where to begin!

P.S. My warrenty runs out in 1,000 miles!

Thanks.

Re: ABS kicking in on dry pavement?

Are you still running on the OEM shocks? If so at 100k you are over due for a new set (I suggest Monroe Sensatracs).

Have you replaced your brake pads? Have you bled the brakes (air in the lines)? (If you have newer pad the brakes would of been bled).

Have you pulled the fuse for the ABS under the hood to see if the problem still occurs? (pulling the fuse will not effect your braking, it will ONLY turn off ABS.

Read up on the FAQ's for more ABS helpful tips.

I do not beleive I have replaced the OEM shocks. I'll read up on that...I never thought about the shocks as the cause. I just got new brakes so I do not think it is that. As for the ABS, I will have the dealer pull the ABS for a while and see if I get the same bumpy ride while braking. Thank you. Any other thoughts are appreciated as well.

Re: ABS kicking in on dry pavement?

I am the second owner of my 99 Rodeo and the ABS has always been like yours. I recently went to the dealer and they did the ABS recall for me for free. IT is 100 times better. I am going to put new shocks on soon and I bet that will help too. Make sure the recall was performed if it applies to your vehicle.

Looks like my 2000 was 1 year too late. I am guessing that (based on my searches) there were no '00 vehicles with this problem. Thanks for the advice!

Re: ABS kicking in on dry pavement?

check out your sticker in your drivers side door jam, to see when your build date was. I think there was a handfull of 2000 that needed th reprogram. Also, if your dealer is cool they will hook up their computer to see if you have the right verison of the ABS software.

Thanks. I called the dealer and he is going to run the test on the ABS. Hopefully (being a Honda Dealer) they will be able to pick it up even it is not an Isuzu.
