Lesabre Blower motor only works at "high"
Hi everyone! First post to the forum. I hope this has not been addressed much, if so, I am really sorry!! I have been very frustrated the last three months or so. I own a 1990 Lesabre limited. I have a manual heat/AC. I have no blower to heater or AC in low, medium, medium-high, but the fan blows full force when the switch is on the high position. I have changed the fan switch and the resistor (I think that is what it is called, 2 by 4 inch plastic next to firewall with springs on the bottom side) I am at a loss as to what to do next?!?! Any suggestions would be much appreciated!! Sorry for the long post!! Chad

Re: Lesabre Blower motor only works at "high"
My first guess would have been the resistor as well. The problem may be in the blower motor itself, especially it being 15 years old, and not knowing how much it has been used in the past. That might be your next move, to check the blower motor operation.

Re: Lesabre Blower motor only works at "high"
The high speed circuit is seperate from the low and medium speed circuit. You problem most likely is you have a bad relay. Remove the plastic rainshield (2 nuts) to find the relay center. The relay you want to replace has five wires going into it - orange, red, black, purple, and dark blue. Notice that these wires also go to the blower resistor which you already replaced. PS. I had the same problem in my 90 Lesaber and replaced the same parts as you too.

Thanks for the replies!! Yogi, did the relay fix your problem?? How much would that set me back? And where exactly would that relay be? Sorry for the newbie questions, but I really appreciate the help!! Chad

Re: Lesabre Blower motor only works at "high"
I would reccomend getting a Haynes or Chilton manual for your vehicle. It has a lot of information that you can find helpful in learning more about your vehicle, and diagnosing any problems. As for price, you can call around to your local autoparts stores and if you don't know the name of the part you need, you can describe it the best you can.

blower motor
it is defantly your blower motor resitor pack. This typicly cost around 30 dollars. Your high is seprate and ran strait off of your source voltage

Re: Lesabre Blower motor only works at "high"
Dramey, I replaced the resistor (2 by 4 inch plastic on outside firewall with springs coming out the bottom). Part number is 25532108 but it didn't seem to work. Could there be something that could short out this resistor? Thanks again for the advice!!!

Re: Lesabre Blower motor only works at "high"
Yes, replacing my relay gave me the low and medium speeds back and fixed my problem.
The wiring diagram shows that the source voltage that the low and medium speeds comes in from fuse 5d, goes thru the heater control, goes thru the blower resistor (reducing amps and volts), goes straight thru the blower relay to the blower motor and ground. The high speed circuit is much the same except instead of going thru the blower resistor, it ACTIVATES (audible clicking noise) the blower relay. The relay switches the source voltage to a hard wired hot wire (the red wire in the relay) and it goes to the blower motor. I suspect, in my case, the problem was that the contacts in the relay were burnt. To confirm the relay is the problem, Set the heater control to medium speed, turn on the ignition, remove the connector to the relay, jump the dark blue wire to the purple wire in the connector. You can also just check for reduced voltage in the dark blue wire. The relay's job is to send that voltage to the motor. I'm sorry for the poor directions in my last post. The relay center is located on the top of the back firewall under a plastic rain guard. Two nuts to take it off. On the 90 Lesabre, there are at least two relays pressed on a mounting bar. One relay is for the AC, one is for the blower speeds. When you remove the right one, no power will go to the blower motor on any speed. BTW: The relay cost about $15 or so to replace at Autozone. |
