Contemplating 98 V8 Explorer

Hello all.
I'm looking at 97,98 Explorer V8. Any issues I should be seeking out? I need a V8 for boating. Currently have a 96 F150. 5.0 V8. How's this all wheel drive? Two I'm considering have 73K and 85K miles. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what to look out for. I'va also considered the V6 but am not sure how good it would pull a 20 foot runabout.

Thanks.

Re: Contemplating 98 V8 Explorer

It depends on how much your boat weighs. The OHC V6 has more power than the OHV V6 and ofcourse the 5.0 V8 is most powerful and has a thirst for fuel. As for All wheel Drive or 4WD, they are great in the snow and rain and handle pretty easily. Some folks have problems with the transmissions but not all. As long as its maintained you should be fine. As for the OHC V6, they tend to go through a timing chain and have intake problems so you may want to stick with the V8. I would go for one with the lowest mileage you can find and see if you can get some maintanence records with it. If not you may want to do some preventative stuff when you buy it i.e. oil change, transmission flush, maybe a tuneup if it needs one, air and fuel filters. Overall a good all around vehicle. Good Luck
