crazy sound when its cold out
i know my brothers 88hatch does this too.
when its like -30 or colder and you dont warm up your car and you drive and go above about 50km/h (im obviously in canada) does your car make a crazy "whirring" sound that gets louder as you go faster? it goes away when you slow down, but its a fuckin pain in the ass, so i never drive my car cold. ever. i'd rather be late to wherever i need to go than have that shit happening in my car. i hope im not the only one...

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
Could be because -30 is fucking rediculously cold, id say just give it that extra time to warm up and get all the fluids and shit warmed up and moving........

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
to tell you the truth, you know its actually BAD to warm your car up? Getting in a driving it could is acutally better for it. Try to fight me on this one.

I'm not going to try and fight you but i would like to know how it is better?
is it because it would be better for the cold air to hit a colder motor or what? |

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
My power steering pump wines like a bitch when it's cold out. Can probably hear it a block away until it warms up.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

sometimes you are just in a hurry to get somewhere and you dont have time to warm it up. yesterday i would have had to do that, instead i chose to be about 15 min late for class to save my car some pain.
do the 89si's have power steering? theres sure none on my car, i was wondering if it could be broken on my car or something, cuz its a huge pain in the ass cranking the wheel in a parking lot with my 16's on, its a fuckin work out doing a 2 point turn. i wish i could just have power steering for those situations, i like how you can feel the road better without it when your driving, unlike american suvs.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
Warming up your car is better. Maybe Hybrid is thinking of carburetors (idling a carb for a long time over a course of a long time can eventually cause it to go out of synch)... it's been a long time since I've heard anybody try to argue about this one.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
i've never heard it argued, lol.
i thought its pretty obvious that you should warm up the engine when its -30 or colder.. even when its like -10 for that matter. dont you want the oil to warm up to properly lubricate all your moving parts?

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
I always give mine a few mintues or so to warm up, just to get all the fluids in the right places. Reguardless of the temp.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
OK here it goes.
When does an engine recieve the most damage? When its cold. Allowing your car to idle for a period of time to allow it to warm up is going to cause your motor to have premature cylinder wall wear. Also, when your car is cold and running you have moisture in your engine, in turn the moisture finds its way to your oil, which then causes your oil to "sludge". Its best to start your car up, let it idle a few seconds to get the oil flowing, and then to drive it normally to get it up to temp as quickly as possible. Go ahead and say "what about my oil, its cold and its not flowing". Well if you have the proper oil in your car that is rated for cold weather (ex. 5w30) it wont have a problem, its rated for cold weather and is extra thin. And your oil is flowing instantly when you start your car, you already have oil in the filter that is ready to lube up your bearings and cyliders and head, if it wasn't flowing right away you'd throw your bearings out every time you start your car. And now you want me to state where I get my information from? OK. I'm a student at UTI, pretty much the best auto school in america right now. And right now I'm in my basic engines course, and we are learning all about the lubrication system right now. Yes, even I was amazed when I heard this statement, but after my teacher explained it, it all made sence.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out
Well if indeed true... when your car is running cold it runs so much crappier than when warmed up... are you takin a chance of fucking things up running them when theyre not running at peak ? Im not questioning your knowledge by no means just curious
