96 timing belt life span ??

Recently got a 96 Tracer with 1.9 l engine, with 87,000 miles on it.
Any thoughts on when I should replace timing belt as a preventive measure ? Thanks!

autozone and ford both have webpages with recommended service intervals. I think it is 60,000

Latest info on timing belt replacement has increased the interval from 60K to 100K on the 1.9L, 120K on the 2.0L Or, 72 & 84 months.

if its the original then replace it, i dont think it will destroy that engine if it breaks tho, some engines will.

Re: 96 timing belt life span ??

Like that famous statesman C. Eastwood was wont to say;

"Do ya feel lucky... punk. Well.... do ya?"

A car with 90K on the odo is coming the end of the useful "factory recommended" life of a lot of components. The timing belt is one of them. 60K or 100K....which do you prefer? If you replace the belt now(and the water pump, too, because it's right in there with the timing belt). You *know* for sure (or at least have a very high expectation that) neither one of them is going to fail for a long time. The water pump is just a pain and will make a mess as it leaks. The timing belt can be more disasterous..... like turn the motor into garbage. I don't know if the 1.9L is an "interference" engine or not (this means that if the belt breaks and valves stay open when they should be closed, the piston *will* hit them as the engine winds down). At the very least, if the belt breaks, you're coming home behind a tow truck.

How lucky to ya feel?

Mike

Re: 96 timing belt life span ??

If your timing belt breaks it will not jam the valves into the top of the pistons. I had a belt break at 100,000 miles and it didn't damage the engine.
This was on the 95 wagon with l.9 L engine. But, why pay to have it towed. Replace the belt.

I had 2 timing belts break, at different times of course, on a 1993 and engine was fine both times.

Re: 96 timing belt life span ??

My timing belt's teeth stripped at about 100k.
No engine damage.

Don't forget to replace the water pump at the same time.

Re: 96 timing belt life span ??

im pretty sure the 1.9 is a non interference engine.. meaning if timing if off you piston wont collide with valves and all that jazz
you still gonna have a problem tho, spark knock, hot spots, multiple detinations...........
