Question Spedo problem, Electrical?

Hey guys, I'm new to the Ford Forum, I usually am on the Pontiac Grand AM forum. Any way I am trying to help out my neighbor, he's fighting cancer and can't work on his own truck. I told him about how much help I have received on the Grand Am forum told him that the Explorer forum should help to get his speedometer issue resolved.

The problem is this as he has described it to me: When the truck is cold the speedo is inop. after the truck warms up a little the speedo will peg out to top speed, after a few miles of driving the speedo will calm down and begin to operate normally with the exception of adding any type of electrical drain on the system. It seems that if he puts on a turn signal or applies the brakes the speedo will pulse to the flash of the dash indicator or will peg out again if the brakes are applied. If he drives with out additions the speedo operates just fine.

I am not familiar with the Ford products, if you have some input please be specific, I do have enough mechanical back ground to understand how the systems work, Lets just say I am above oil changes and brake jobs, but below an engine overhaul.

I want to help him out, now that he is on a fixed income expensive garage repairs are out of the question.

Thank you in advance for you input, it will be greatly appreciated.
Dan

Forgot: 2000 Ford Explorer, He had just had a rebuildt engine put in by the dealer that he bought it from, most likely no more than 5,000 miles on new motor. I will be talking with him in a couple of hours and will be able to answer any of your questions.
Thanks again,
Dan

Re: Spedo problem, Electrical?

B33p3r, Thank you for your response, I talked with my neighbor yesterday. He filled me in on some other issues that he had expeirenced in the past. I think you are on the right track, I'm going to take a look at it later in the week and I'll let you know the outcome.
Thanks again,
Dan
