'98 Blazer Starting problem

I've got a '98 Blazer that won't start. It has no prblem cranking but just won't fire at all. It first happened a month ago in a parking lot....after about an hour of waiting for a tow I happened to crank it again and it started instantly. Last weekend it did the same thing...after waiting a couple of hours it once again started with no problem. Last night I could not get it to start and left it over night...still will not start. I do notice that the check engine light goes on during cranking and the fuel gage goes from 1/4 tank to empty (not sure if this is normal).

Any ideas on possible causes of things to check.

No other problems. Just cranks without attempting to catch. I borrowed a scanner and here is what I pulled as far as codes.

P0102 - Mass or Volume Air Flow circuit Low.
P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P1351 - Ignition Control Module circuit High Voltage

Like I said it happed a couple of other times, but after letting it sit for a couple of hours it started on first crank.

I had the same problem with my 97 Blazer, an intermittent no start and traced it to a defective ignition switch. Sometimes the car would start and then stall for no reason and a few times it would just shut off when coming to a stop. It would crank but there was no voltage to the ignition. Pull the coil wire out and crank the motor. You should hear the spark cracking at the coil. If it doesn't, it is probably the ignition switch in the column. You need a special socket to remove it It's an E4 deepwell inverted torx. Hope this helps you out, because it took me two weeks to finally track down this intermittent problem.

Re: '98 Blazer Starting problem

I am having a similar problem. I have a spark to the ignition coil but no spark to the plugs. The motor backfires through the throttle body sometimes. Any suggestions?

I've been reading a lot of these threads lately and it seems that people are having this backfiring problem a lot, and that it can be attributed to the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). The other day I had a backfire sounding noise and when I tried to rev it up it skipped a little. I revved it out some more and something seemed to clean itself out and fix it. I just checked the check engine light codes today and one of my error messages says the EGR is at fault. So I would suggest examining that (as I am when I get home from college).
