taurus trans bulkhead connector

On the 96 taurus trans bulkhead connector what does this doggone thing do? My trans with this unplugged goes into gear (d,n,r & low but does shift from 1st 2nd & 3rd) but as sone as you connect it it goes into gear but jumps out of gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
PG

Are you talking about the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor)? It is on the long shaft part of the transmission. It controls your speedometer and seems to me to control your shifting. I was having problems with my transmission(1996 taurus) where it was dropping gears and shifting all the time(like every 4or 5 seconds and the speedometer stopped working. I replaced it(in about 20 minutes and 22$ later) and the car runs great again. I hope this helps you. Let me know how you make out.

Re: Vss

the sensor I am talking about is just next to the gear selector on top of the transmission... I was told it is connected to the valve body. and the only way to get it off is to take the valve body out and it will slide up. the plug is D shaped.
