how do i remove the bed on my 89 c1500?

I heard its really easy to do, something like 9 bolts you take out i guess. Im just wondering this to take some weight off the truck, like anything that can make it lighter or get better mpg with im trying. It's not illegal to drive around without the bed on either right?

In most states it is not leagal to just remove the bed of the truck. You need something covering the tires so things do not fly up and hit the car behind you. If you are just lookin to improve your MPG then you can just remove the tailgate and that should help some. Contact your local state police post to find out for sure if doing either of these things is legal in your state.

To answer your original question there should only be about six bolts holding the bed to the frame. then there is also the wire harness to the taillights. You will want to save that so you can hook the lights back up if you remove the bed.

Also an easy thing to forget is the gas filler neck. You have to get it and the ground wire out of the way too!

I took the bed off of my 89 and I believe there were 8 bolts, the wiring harness for the lights, and the filler neck. But be sure to look out for the ground cable from the filler to the bed.

I do not know if it is legal or not to remove the bed, but they are not very heavy. My father and I just lifted it off the truck. So it can not weigh that much.

As for the gas mileage, be sure to check the injecters to make sure they are working correctly, check the coil, and make sure the valve in the air intake works properly. I had problems with these and it helped my gas mileage.

Removing the bed wouldn't improve the gas mileage on a truck much, it's a VERY small percaentage of the total weight. If you were removing that much weight from a civic or something, it might make a noticeable difference. As Austin8214 said, try removing the tailgate.
