1991 Chevy Lumina Euro 3.1
I own a 91 Chevy Lumina w/ 3.1 and recently it has been stalling on me when coming to a stop or driven at a low speed.
Once the cars has stalled it will not start up again. I am able to drive it maybe 10 - 15 miles before this problem occurs. At first I thought it was bad gas & put in the additives - seem to help but it gets like a slug in it then takes off while driven ! Hasnt stalled yet after putten in the dry gas & injector cleaner - just wondering what else it could be due to I drive 1 hr to & from work everyday and have to have been towed 4 x's already in 2 days !! HELP NEEDED ASAP ...... taking it today to have it put on scanner - could the converter be plugged causen my car to stall & not restart ? Email any info to : [email protected] 04/08/05 |

Have your ignition control module checked - the symptoms you describe sounds like a failing ICM. when they go bad, after the engine is hot they tend to act up, then once its cool again, it starts like there was never a problem.

Re: 1991 Chevy Lumina Euro 3.1
I agree with Manny, sounds like a bad ICM or a bad crank position sensor. I'd change the CPS first if you can't narrow it down, it's cheaper ($15-20 versus $120-150) and easier to replace (1 bolt and 1 pigtail) The ignition module is mounted on the front of the engine below the exhaust manifold and is a pain in the a@@ to get to.

We changed the ICM - the problem is still there, now it gives you a sign before it dies- the RPM's gauge goes nuts and I do mean nuts....the car dies and it takes for ever to get it started ( after its cool ) while the car is cooling , we pulled a plug to see if there's spark & nothen .... no spark - waited 1 hr after dicken around w/ the car and drove it home w/ a plug wire pulled ( on 5 cyl ) thats how we got it to start - w/ taking a plug wire off - So it was not the ICM ..........once again it left me on the side of the expressway ! |
