91 jeep wrangler questions (engine and suspension)

i have a 1991 jeep wrangler with a 4.0L v-6. It has a 5 speed manual transmission. I have two questions. When it is between 3/4 and 1/2 a tank of gas, it wants to cut out on me when slowing down and downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. But it does not happen everytime. After I am below a half of a tank or on a full tank it does not happen. I have changed out the fuel filter and it was clean. ANy suggestions?

MY second problem is when i am driving i am getting a banging noise some where between me trans and fron suspension. sometimes it feels like it is in my front right wheelwell and sometimes it feels like it is right under me almost like my trans is loose. it mostly happens when I am turning or hit a bump. Is it maybe a u-joint or is it something worse. I recently had my trans worked on but when I got under it nothing seemed to be loose.

any help would be greatly appreciated because I am not mechanically inclined and do not want to get hosed by some mechanic for stuff I do not need.

SO please give me some help my Jeep family thanks

Re: 91 jeep wrangler questions (engine and suspension)

Your front "bang" noise could be a worn-out shock. Remove the shock and look at the bushings, are they tight or sloppy. If you compress your shock it should rebound, if not replace it.

The clunk noise could also be the sway bar mounts, so check those as well.

For the Jeep trying to stall when slowing, have you checked the fuel pump and filter in the tank? You said you changed the filter; if the one you changed is under the hood, you could still have a problem with the pickup in the gas tank.

That's kind of odd. Have you tried some Drigas or Heet? You might have some water/gunk in the tank that sloshes forward at that level only, since it happens only when you're slowing down. Otherwise, I'm not sure what it would be.

could it possibly be a sensor like a throttle position sensor or something. it seems to be doing it all the time now.

It sure could be. I'd think about having the crank position sensor checked.

i' have to say check your exhaust downpipe too, i hae a 90 yj and the hanger wasn't replaced into the bushing on the side of the trans, thus the pipe was knocking off the skidplate on pumps and turns and such
