Advance timing with this mod????

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting

This is most definitely a scam but what harm can be done by doing this and how does it possibly work? Does it put the computer into a loop mode or something? This is very confusing!

It is an Intake Air Temperature Sensor mod.

Makes the ECM think the air is colder coming into the engine so it will dump more fuel in.

The thing is, the computer will see that it is out of whack and correct it.

So reading through some of these posts I have noticed that the computer will correct a lot of different things on it's own when you "mod" it. There is probably no answer to this question but about how long would it take? Say I did this mod? Got more horses? How long would it last?

Re: Advance timing with this mod????

even if it did fool the computer and dump more fuel in ,that would made the mixture FAT or rich. Rich mixtures do not yeald as much power as leaner ones.(with in reason). so in theory I call it a SCAM..

This is true, but the oxygen sensors will lean out of rich mixture by reducing injector pulse width over time.

You will get a small increase in power as the computer advances the timing to coincide with the increase of fuel, but it will eventually relearn and adjust it back to normal.

alright, maybe i don't know what i'm talking about here, but i'll have to disagree with you there.

if richer mixtures don't yield as much power, then why is it your car runs slightly better when its cold versus when its fully warmed up ? (mine does at least) it seems to me (to a point) that the more gas you can get into your cylinders, the better.

lean mixtures can be deadly, especially with forced induction. ... they burn holes in pistons, produce knock and ping, and are poor for power and driveabliity.

again this is all my opinions, and i know i'm sticking my neck out here and i'll probably be corrected... but whatever... someone correct this

Re: Re: Re: Advance timing with this mod????

More fuel is better, to a point. If you can flow enough air in and out of the engine to compensate for the additional fuel flow, then you (in theory) will get more power up to a point. Obviously, there is much less control nowadays with computers.

Someone who plugged this 15 cent Radio Shack resistor into their air temp sensor on a bone stock vehicle might notice a difference for a short while, until the ECM "learns" what's happened, as BlazerLT mentioned in a previous reply.

But, more fuel with the same air flow will make for a rich mixture which wastes fuel, increases emissions, etc.

And you are 100% correct about the lean mixture - I'd take an engine that runs a little rich over an engine that runs too lean anyday. Spark plugs are cheaper than pistons. Of course, an engine that runs with a air to fuel mixture of 14.7:1 will always run the best....

You have to remember timing.

The computer will advance the timing as well.
