Light wiring

Im trying to install some interior lights in my car and im trying to hook them up a certain way. Say if i wanted them to come on when my dome light comes on. Or come on when i brake or turn signal. I tried hooking it up to the fuse but it just stayed on. Is it even possible to do this? Thanx.

"Why" you ask? All for the love of customizing.

Re: Light wiring

lol, the fuse just gives it constant power. That power goes to a switch which then controls your lights. If you want the lights to come on with your dome light, then you should just connect the wires to the dome light's wires (or whatever light). Unless you are talking about a butt load of lights, it should not cause a problem.

Also, you can run a wire from the fuse to a switch, and then control the lights with that. Its pretty simple. If you do that, you should get an in-line fuse holder, which you can find at auto zone, its a very simple little thing, and you just wire it in between the fuse box, and the positive terminal of the switch. That way, if your wiring goes wrong, or comes undone and a positive touches metal, all your lights, or whatever fuse you hooked it to, wont stop working.

Re: Light wiring

If you want the lights to come on when the door opens you can hook it up to either the dome light or directly to the switch on the inside of the door frame. If you do that you'll need to connect the power wire to the fuse box and the ground wire will be connected to the switch. if you want it to come on with your brake light connect the ground to the body of the car and the power to the break light +.
If you want it to come on with the trunk light hook the ground to the body of the car and the + to the trunk light +. Same with a hood light. If you want it to come on with the horn it's the same way. And the same way with the dash lights.the ground wire always connects to the body of the car, unless you hook it up to the door switch because the door switch 99.9% of the time usses the ground to switch the light on and off. It's done as a safty precaution.
