radio/cd won't work

A little help?
96 750il: My radio spontaneously quit working. One day about a week ago I turned the car on, but the radio wouldn't turn on. All buttons light up (when headlights are on), but the balance/fader, the EQ, and the audio menu on the Multi-Info Display won't even turn on. I don't know if the problem is in the radio itself or in the MID.

-Both radio fuses +fuse next to wiring harness good.
-recognizes casette (little red light), but wont play (play button is on MID when working)
-cd changer accepts cd holder and cycles through cd's, but of course nothing can be played

A few ideas I had (seem unlikely)

-Several days before, I'd taken the radio just out of the dash (not unpluging anything) looking for pre-outs. Maybe the security had a problem with this, but it was several days before the radio's failure.
-Internal fuse (not next to wiring harness, but inside radio)?
-broken wire/short between radio and MID?

If you have any idea you think might help, please let me know.
Thanks!

Re: radio/cd won't work

If there is a radio fuse it would almost certainly be located at the rear of the unit. However, since you said a little red light acknowledges cassettes it's probably not that. I'd take the unit back out of the dash and make sure all of the connectors are securely in place and also make sure you didn't accidently scrape a bare spot in the wiring.

If that didn't work, well, hmmm. The best thing to do would be to swap in a known good radio (friend?). This would tell you if the problem is in the radio or in the MID.

radio works now ... sort of

Thanks for reply,

The other day, the radio still wouldn't work but I turned the volume up with the steering wheel and the radio turned up. But I still couldn't turn the radio off or change station after 4-5 minutes driving and playing with various buttons it started to work and everything turned on and it was normal. Now sometimes I can get it to work, and sometimes I can't. Any ideas ?????? Just now checked and radio works but EQ didn't display and I can't change the station (main menu for radio on MID not up). Hmmmmmm ......

Hmmm. I'm thinking the software for the MID or its data have been corrupted somehow and it's going bonkers on certain functions. I think I read where you can reset the computer on those E38 models (mine is an older E32), like rebooting your PC. That would let the software go through its initialization phase again and might restore your complete functionality. You may loose some personal settings?? but it would be worth it probably if it fixes the problem. Good luck.

I own a '86 735i and had a similar problem with the radio. The anti-theft kicked in for some reason and made the radio and the cassette player non-functional. Wonder if that happend when you removed the position of the system?
I resolved the situation by turning on my ignition to position 1 where all the dash lights come on and leaving it that way for one hour. This will allow you to reset your 'code' (I found my code # in my manual). Once that was done everything began functioning normally.

This is for an '86 model. I have no idea how it works on a '96 though.
