neon starter smoking

Hi, i have a 95 plymouth neon and really love it. however my starter went out recently so i just put a new one in....the only problem is i don't know very much about cars and when i tried to start the car this morning after putting the starter in it (the starter) started making a grinding noise and smoking....what could possibly be causing this? any advice would be appreciated.

did the starter come with shims???..make sure none of the connections are grounding out...remove the "new " starter and have it tested, install making sure it's not binding (thus the shims), and make sure the connections are not twisted that they are grounding out against metal on the frame, or motor...good luck
