Does anyone know the specs for the original Clarion audio system installed in the 1996 car? Amplifier wattage, etc?

Thanks - and suggestion
I replaced the rears with a pair of Infinity (really, they were the best price/performance) Kappa 625 speakers this weekend.
They are much better than the original Clarions, but are a little underpowered - although at typical volumes, they're fine. Thanks again. |

i think the stock system sounds great - however, my cd player has recently crapped out. its funny because the colder it gets, the more it skips!!
Thinking about replacing it with another single cd head unit, but was wondering if anyone else has had this problem - even better: does someone actually know of a fix for it or repair costs?

CD players
My CD player occasionally refuses to auto-inject a CD, and I've got to eject and re-insert a few times.
If your CD player is skipping, try using a Cd lens cleaner disc. These are available at most stereo stores, and they've saved my butt once or twice. Typically, it's just a CD platter with a tiny soft brush on the underside that wipes dust from the lens. You may want to try this before replacing the head unit. -D |

thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to try that.
Mine has the same problem you are describing as well, especially with CDR disks. they used to insert and play fine, but now I can't get them to go in and if it does, it skips too much to listen to...

Just Get a New One
I would really recommend just going ahead and replacing your CD player and hopefully your speakers as well with some aftermarket stuff. I took out the clarion head unit and the sony add on CD player and put in a Panasonic head unit and a pocket deck to fill the CD players former home. It sounds great, I just have to fix a little fuzziness in the rear speaker, my friend and I suspect the amp. The CD player in my 1993.5 was just so bad with skips, if you like your music, it isn't worth it to keep it around.

yeah, it's a change tray.. it's pretty convenient. try locating one at a junkyard, maybe you can get it for 5 bucks or so. just tell them it came out of a ford escort.

just a note on the skipping CD player in cold weather...
most likely- because it skips when the environment is cold, that suggests to me that the suspension system inside the deck is probably dirty. the oils that have lubricated the innner workings of the suspension have probably become gummed up with dirt and dust... so when it's cold, the oils cannot lubricate as well... however- when it gets warmer... the oils begin to melt a little more and it starts to let the suspension travel with the undulations of the car as you drive... thus- allowing you to hear skip-free music. solution: take out deck, open up and clean. or- go buy a new deck... the difference will be phenomenal- higher fidelity, more wattage coming from the new deck, better looking interface... etc. good luck. ----cliffud-p10---- |

Whatever you do, keep it small and simple! You don't want to ruin the best part of the G20, its handling. Big subs and amps weigh you down! I would reccomend a nice deck, new speakers all around, and maybe a small sub if you need bass. Then either use the head unit for the speakers, or get a 4/5 channel, 5 being if you want a sub. Or get a Bazooka Bass Tube, or Infinity Basslink. You might want to go with the infinity, just so you can have an infinity in an infinity
