NEW MEMBER caprice questions rear end.

heres the deal you can skip this if you wish its just a little backround

I am a 19 year old mechanical engineering student, who started working on cars at the age of 12. My first car was a 1985 buick regal g body, everything was setup on this car it was ready for a motor swap. At binghamton the car blew the hg on the old 231 (garbage motor). THE BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE was donating that car!!!! i had no way to fix it myself up here, i needed a car, and no way to get it back home.

Got my Gti vr6, i personally did all the work to this car and it is still amazing to this day. but i feinded for a rwd chevy still, kicking myself everyday that i got rid of the perfect project car.

1982 caprice 2 door, 90k on the 267cui motor. mint cond 500$. <--- my father snached it from his friend for me.

My questions.
1) Which rear ends can i swap into the car, im looking for a posi rear with disk breaks. impala/caprice 9c1 94-96 rears, will they bolt up?

If it dosent bolt up, which posi rear easily goes into the car?
2) What kind of factory UPGRADED front breaks can be bolted up? again i wonder impala/9c1 94-96.

IM BACK BABY the passion is just as strong if not stronger. I appreciate all help that i receive on this topic. as far as i can see this is going to be a strict project car with no expense
PLANS
Lt1/ls1/ or carb bb depending on what i can source
hopefully t56 hydro clutch conversion
posi rear, tubed, mctomp street et's
eibach ss impala springs/bilstein shocks/ boxed control arms/energy suspension poly bushings/f body sway bars.
Custom body and paint done by me.
jury still out on the interior.

Re: NEW MEMBER caprice questions rear end.

I don't know if a newer Caprice rear will bolt up or not. I'm sure that you can find an earlier piece that will be easier to install. Alot of the earlier cars did come with limited slip differentials.... you could even check into swapping the gears instead of the entire axle. These cars already have a beefy braking system, and if you want bigger brakes, swap the parts for HD wagon parts or even 9C1 parts.

Just a thought....

Re: NEW MEMBER caprice questions rear end.

i appreciate the reply, i was looking for a definative answer but its better then nothing. even if it takes modifying the impala ss rear i really want a good rear and disk brakes. i might just use a camaro center section with the axle tubes i have now and modify then end flanges on the axle tubes from the caprice to use the camaro rear disk setup or the impala rear disks.
ANY idea of this ever being attempted before? im a skilled metal worker and have access to welders ,grinders, media blasters etc... so it shouldnt be too hard for me if i can make a jig of some sort for myself.

Any comments or critisism's on my vdub? i know its probably not everyones cup of tea but i think it was done with some class and its not done yet

Here is my goal for the dub

Re: NEW MEMBER caprice questions rear end.

Well there is really no point to it. The rear disc brakes offer little benefit of a good set of drums except in repeated high speed stops.

Backing plates, calipers etc will swap easily enough from a 9c1/ImpSS rear to yours. But you would need to get different rotors or axles because of the difference in the bolt pattern.

The rear-end will bolt it with out any problem. But you will need to have your driveshaft shortenedby an inch or more to work. The 7.625" rear you have is shorter front to rear that a 8.5" rear you'll find in a 9c1/ImpSS

Like the VW, a friend has a bright red one that is cool.

Hate the big picture of it that you posted. Maybe more folks would have replied if they weren't waiting for that picture to load or having to scroll across the page to find the Post reply button.

Just a thought.
