Air Filter Change--Not cabin filter

Hi new to the forum,
Just picked up a 2002 SEL Windstar and want to check the air filter. I notice the clamp and attempted to get it off tonight but it appears other pieces need to go first--anyone done this seemingly easy task that would like to share and spare me any headaches--thanks much.

Re: Air Filter Change--Not cabin filter

1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (rubber accordian) by loosening the two clamps. Remove the tube connected to the lower rear of the outlet tube.

2. Disconnet the mass air flow connector.

3. Unclip the accelerator cable.

4. Seperate the air cleaner from the battery tray.

5. Remove air cleaner

Also make sure pos battery cable red COVER is on good.. The Lever type clamp holding the air box together can hit the pos batt cable and could cause damage to the electrics if not carefull.. Extra safe method put a rag over the pos batt cable. Just a tip.. Hit mine one time sparks flew..No damage though.

Re: Air Filter Change--Not cabin filter

The Haynes manual can lead a person to do this task in a difficult way ... unless you happen to look in a particular section of the book.

In chapter #1, (Tune-up and routine maintenance) it shows opening the air filter housing "in-place" to change the air filter. I have never had good luck changing the air filter this way.

In chapter #4, (Fuel and exhaust systems) it shows "air cleaner housing - removal and installation" (section 9). Complete with a photo, it describes removing the entire housing ....just like the posters above describe. A much easier way to get to the air filter and do a good job reassembling.
