1989 cherokee abs conversion
My abs pump does not work, I just bought the rig as is so I really don't know what else is screwed on the abs system. It is not on the road yet so Chrysler will not fix it. I pulled the booster and proportioning valve off an 88, also the coolant tank for $45. Ordered new master cyl. for $36, (canadian). I just checked the bolt pattern from the 88 and everything looks good. This is going to take me a while, on and off for a week as I have to do the lines and the rear brakes as well. I will keep everybody posted along the way.

Okay, I ripped all the abs stuff out, clean up, sanded and painted the booster from the 88 non abs unit. I just finished installing it last night, I put the combination valve and lines in first then the new master cylinder. Was not as hard as I thought it would be. Everything lines up and bolts up nice. Who wants all the old abs crap. I had to snip the wires from the sensors in the wheels, couldn't remove them as it would leave a hole in the backing plates. I put my garbage out on Sunday nights.....

Everything is finished. Same brake light switch, pedal bolts up nice to the 88 booster's rod. They seem to work fine, how ever, the pedal sits a bit lower than before. Something I will have to get used to. If I were to do it again, I think I would have also replaced the combination valve, as this one is 16 years old, don't know how long they last or if they ever wear out. I am satisfied with how the project turned out and feel much better about having a reliable system in place.

Looking for more info...
I was wondering if you needed to change anything inside the ltd. ie:brake pedal swing arm, inner mounting brackets for said arm, etc...
I had the same job done last summer at a garage and they told me it was normal for me to have no "feel" of the brake pedal. Whether I brake soft or hard I get no feedback from the pedal at all. I can lock up the brakes without feeling any backpressure on the pedal. It kind of floats, something like the feel of the gas pedal. The only ressistance I get is when it hits the floorboard, and by then it has locked up a long time ago. |

Re: 1989 cherokee abs conversion
I didn't change anything inside at all, everything lined up perfect, the only thing I have left to do is to replace a faulty master cylinder I bought for it at the time of the conversion. I have been driving it , the pedal feels pretty good, how ever it is a bit low, I am still getting some air in the lines though and I believe its the rebuilt master i bought for it. I'll keep you posted.
