Re: Engine or motor?

I have about 5 on my car!

Unfortunately that also includes the cooling fan, heater fan, starter, sunroof, etc.

I also use both terms, but which is correct?

I usually think of a motor as something powered by electricity and an engine as something powered by gas. Or, I think of a motor as a long block, and an engine as the complete assembly with all accessories (alternator, starter, etc). I don't know the actual definition of each, but last time I checked I was using 10W-30 motor oil in my engine (?).

Re: Engine or motor?

I'm with lxndr on this one... Electric motor, diesel engine... Rotory Motor... I think of a motor as something that spins to make power... And an engine as something that has pistons to make the power. *shrugs* I think it's really just a matter of opinion.

Re: Engine or motor?

As long as you know what people are on about it doesn't really matter.

BTW if anybody doesn't understand any of my British phrases, then just say and I'll try to re-phrase it in a more international way.

It's funny how a Brittish person describing car problems sounds more like an American S&M fantasy. With all this checking under bonnets and lifting of boots, who could blame us?

What is a "back box" anyway?

Whatever it is, just be sure to keep it away from the fags in your ashtray.

Re: Engine or motor?

Sorry, to a Yank my last comment may have been in poor taste...

Actually, it was probably in poor taste to a Brit too.

Did I mention that I need a moderator?

Re: Engine or motor?

Back box is just the last silencer in the exhaust, the last big bit in the muffler before the tailpipe.
Over here some people who just want to make a load of noise stick them on as they are cheaper than a whole exhaust(muffler).
