Q about tranny

Hi. I have an '89 Celica st and it has tranny issues. The engine is 2 liter, 4 cylinder. The only reason I'm trying to fix it is because I want to be a mechanic and I figured this would be a good project car (since its just sitting on the street anyway).

My Question:
Are trannies from other Toyota models of the same year compatible with my engine? Like, would a camary or corolla tranny work? Also, does it matter if its an auto or manual? The tranny is auto now, but I wouldn't mind switching it to a manual.
