1997 Lumina Power window problem

It started with the driverside window not responding as well as the other 3. It stopped responding altogether a week ago. The switch got stuck. I managed to unstuck the switch.

There is no problem with the other 3 windows. They work just fine.

Please suggest a solution.

I think you just need to replace the master control assembly on the driver's door. Unless the switch got stuck going down, because the window never "bottomed out" fully. You may need to pull the interior door panel off, and lubricate the guide tracks and joints in the assembly. Check that there is no debris collected around the motor, restricting motion. If the window was "slow" and acted like it was straining to operate, this is what you are up against. That or the lift motor is on its' last breath.

Usually, when the motors get weak, they will go down much faster than up. If it was hanging up while trying to lower the window, I think binding from debris or lack of lube would be more likely.

98 Lumina window problem

I have had problems with my driver's side window going down but not wanting to go up. I have to push the button several times to get it to go up. Yesterday as I was trying to get the window to go up smoke started coming out of the top of the door and it smelled like burning rubber. I have no clue as to what is going on.

That would indicate excessive resistance to movement, causing overheated wiring/switch. Either the motor is going bad, or the window's movement is being restricted by lack of lube or crud.

I am having the same problem with my 96 Lumina. the driver window was really sluggish for about 2 weeks then it completely stopped. I can get it to go up and down but I need to "help" it going either way by ushing or pulling on the glass.

I will try the lube thing for now but first I need to know how to get the door panel and all that fun stuff open so I can actually look at it.

Re: 1997 Lumina Power window problem

I have this problem, too. It either works, or doesn't. There's no in-between. By this, I mean that when it works, it works fine, no slow movement up or down. If it doesn't work, it will just move a little bit, like half an inch. Or it will move fine for several inches, then stop. I can wait for a few minutes, or turn the car off for a while, and everything will be fine. It just isn't fun if the window doesn't go up after a drive-through in the winter. I feel like an idiot driving with my window down while its only 10 above. I pulled up to the drive-in at the bank the other day and the window didn't go down, so I just drove through. Wonder what the lady behind me thought?
