94 GC 2WD - Transmission
Hi All -
My Jeep GC has been pretty reliable and has never had any Tranny problems to speak of. We do have a fuse blowing problem which would render the car to stay in only one gear - uusally 2nd. We replace the fuse and everything is great - Then we took the car to a Local Mechanhic with a supposedly good reputatation. He did an inspectuon on the Jeep and repaired a few things - nothing major. While he had the car the tranny fuse blew. When I spoke to the mechanic , I explained about the fuse. Then I picked up the Jeep. Within a week (or less less) we noticed that the Jepp did not Kickdown and shifted strangly between either 1st and second or second and third (right at 17-20 mph). The car seems to shift up- then goes back to the lower gear and then back to the higher gear - this weird exchange happens in just 2 seconds. The car continues to shift upwards just fine but then it does not down shift when I hit the gas. I have to slow down for the transmission to kick down. So we took it back and the did a tranny flush and a filter change and changed the hoses that went to the radiator -they were leaking a little. The flush really didn't do anything except eat up $200. These mechanics think I need a tranny overhaul - I do not believe it. I have read many threads on this great web site and it looks like it could many thing - but rebuild is probley not it? So Far I have these theories 1. Electrical Control module of some type 2. TV cable 3. Govenor or Solenoid in the Transmission I would be very interested in hear about this issue - and if this is something a relative novice could attempt to fix. We have 130K miles on this incredible Jeep and I do not want to spend $1K on it. Thanks Matt 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2wd Laredo White 4.0 Automatic |

Could be your Governor sticking or could be more serious valve body. Try removing the govenor and cleaning it. Its in the valve body of the Trans. You will need to remove the pan and get access to a manual for location of the Governor. If Iam right it has 4 bolts and has a solenoid in the middle of it. Might try cleaning the 3-4 accumulator housing and piston. If it dosent help probally time for a rebuild. If your mech-inclined you can usally get a rebuild Trans for under a 1000 if you do the work yourself.

Re: 94 GC 2WD - Transmission
the governor is electronic.it has a sensor and a solenoid in the valve body .if you have access to a scan tool and a pressure guage you could probably figure out which one is the problem.otherwise you could just replace both.

We just moved to Flower Mound, Texas. Does anyone know how to find an honest mechanic or transmission specialitst in our area? Thanks Again Matt |
