vw passat glw 1995

Can somebody tell me what means that yellow light near an engine sign "check" on the dash. What do I have to check? Is it a major problem?

It means there is a malfunction in the engine or transmission. Unfortunately on your car you have to use a factory VW scanner or find someone with a VAG-COM unit.

In my case it was an emssion control sensor that wasn't covered under the California Emission Warranty. The car ran fine, but the light was a nuisance.

Be careful, the car can appear to be running alright & damaging components such as the catalytic converter.
