My 1992 floods out or otherwise just stops on highway driving

My 1992 runs fine around town, but after I'm on the highway for about an hour, it will sputter and just stop, like it's not getting gas, especially on a slight incline like a freeway overpass. Various mechanics have changed the fuel filter, removed the gas tank and emptied it, thinking there was water in the gas following the Florida hurricanes, and suspected a fuel pump but it tests out OK. They can't get it to act up because they only drive it a few miles around town. I can't take it on highway trips at all now because I have pull over and stop so many times. It's weird that it always starts right up, but a few minutes or a few minles later it will do it again. Anyone else had this problem and solved it??

Re: My 1992 floods out or otherwise just stops on highway driving

My memory is fuzzy, but I seem to remember your model 4Runner has a problem with the fuel line pulsation damper near the firewall. I don't see how this could be causing your problem, but you might take a look at it and see if you can find an obvious problem there.

Another possible source of the problem might be your fuel tank pick-up. Do you know if they checked that out when the fuel pump was tested?

Next time you get this to happen, keep the ignition on and listed by the fuel tank filler tube to test if you can hear the fuel pump. Get used to what it is supposed to sound like when the truck is functioning normally and then compare that with what you hear when the truck dies. Your fuel pump may be overheating and shutting off or binding when hot.

As another test, you can bring along a volt meter and test the pump power when the truck is not running and see if the fuel pump is getting normal voltage - compare with normal. If the voltage is low, then you have to look at the pump circuit external to the tank.
