Diesel engines are almost mandatory for europe. Fuel costs about four times as much as it does here in the US. European makes tend to have a large variety of engines to deal with all of the different laws there, though I think the EU is simplifying much of that.

Yep, you are correct. Fuel costs a lot more over here then in the US, so 7 out of 10 cars you see over here are Diesels. Personnaly I wouldn't buy a diesel powered car from Honda because that's totally out of their ballpark (I know the 6th gen diesel Civic sedans had a lot of problems).

Too bad you're comparing apples to oranges.
US has 93 as pump gas, europe has 106.
I have gas station with 100 octane near me and its like 3 bucks so the price of gas isnt really more expensive, rather they get the good gas and we get the shitty low octane stuff. but if you compare the same octane prices we pay a lot more for them. Yet another place where US gets screwed.

to bad diesel isnt over here, if anyone cares to know diesel has more stored energy to be harnessed then gasoline. only prob is the soot. not to mention i regularly see diesel engines of any make last 500,000 miles+.

Doesnt have to do because you dont actually "explode" the mixture of fuel? So theres less heat created -- thus obviously less stress on the motor?

Diesel isnt over here? It is too... its just limited to that of big rig / heavy trucks... there are pickups out there that use diesel, ah who cares -- 30:1 compression ratio doesnt interest me any
