how to tell if fuel pump is messed up??

lol.. your car won't start.. or while running.. it will stall.. thats about the only way to put it i think.. I mean, you can't really tell if its starting to die.. your engine gets the fuel or it doesn't..

yucky...anyone know how long the stock fuel pump usually lasts till it needs replacement? I guess it varies with each car, but there might be a round figure? This way i can go ahead and replace it around xxx,xxx amount of miles so i won't be stuck in the road somewhere with a dead fuel pump.

On cars as old as ours just wait till you start to have problems with it till you replace it. Chances are, it will last you till you dont own the car anymore.

a problem that i had with my fuel pump was the ground, the ground got corroded so i pulled the pump thinking it was the pump but when i hooked it up to a battery, it worked but i installed a new pump anyways

my 88, i am pretty sure is still stock.. so far it still seems fine.. so 17 years so far.. no bad... and civickiller had the same problem as me last summer.. my fuel pump stopped working. so i dropped the tank and before we went crazy pulling it out, i said to my dad, i'll turn the key and see if you can hear anything. and sure enough, just dropping the tank moved the wires around and it fired right up... never had a problem since..

my buddy just replaced his in his 88 firebird. it finally crapped out on him the other night, his car was a bitch to do tho, 6 hour job, had to drop the exhaust and some supports in the rear

whyd you drop the tank? You couldve gotten to it from underneath the back seat. There are little trap doors on almost all hondas that lead to the fuel pump and the fuel sending sensor or what ever its called.

you have to drop the tank to do fuel pumps in our cars. that "trap door" is for the sending unit only

When a pump goes bad you can sometimes here is knocking. There is a little piston inside and when the pump starts to give out it knocks, kinda like the bottom end of a car when you spin a bearing. It will also stall after it warms up. You would have to keep you foot on the gas so it will not stall.

thats true, if its a mechanical fuel pump that is attached to the block and mechanically powered by the crankshaft. I never heard of that problem on an electric fuel pump inside the gas tank.

it does become noisier when its going out, so you were somewhat right. when they start to go bad, the slight hum you normally hear when you turn the key to the "on" position changes into a loud buzzing sound.
