Performance levels/money

I was wondering what everybody has spend on their cars performance wise and what hp/tq you all are pushing and 1/4 times. That and can these cars, especially gsx, beat a 99-02 trans am. I'm not trying to bench race, i've just loved that car forever and if i can't beat em, might just join them.

Check out DSMTuner.com, they have a great tech guide that tells what mods will give you what power and stuff. As well, there are a tonne of 1/4 mile times and everything on there...ALL DSM.

The tech guide website is: http://www.dsmtuner.com/tech.php

Oh, and why is the trans-am a long time favourite? I personally dislike them....a lot...yeah.

But good to see you are looking at the DSMs!! Power wise, a stock DSM Block has been reported to handle 524whp on a 7 bolt! (as per Jake). So, they are great cars.

i love the styling of the trans am and the unforced power, not hard to reach 700 with a supercharger and an ls1, and the added room, but hey, i love the cockpit feel

Re: Performance levels/money

Trans Am's arnt bad, but if we are talking f-bodies I gotta say Imma Camaro guy. I'd take a LS1 SS camaro over a ws6 trans am anyday.

A stock LS1 f-body runs somewere around a 13.8 1/4 stock I think. So figure the guys with a power chip and exhaust (basic bolts that are really common with f-bodies) are prolly running 13.5's with decent tires. It's not hard to get a dsm to run lower than that at all.

Re: Performance levels/money

It cost me 1800 to run 12.7s at 109.

It cost me another 5-6 grand to run 11.8s.

Another ~3 grand to run 11.3.

Going faster gets exponentially more expensive. But keep in mind that it doesnt cost that much to build a fast car if yo do it all at once. Half of the money I spent was rebuilding the many motors, trannies, and tubos that shit the bed in the process. Upgrading things like injectors 6 times isnt very cost effective either. Etc.

Re: Performance levels/money

it depends on whether you get a 1G (90-94) or 2G (95-99). you can probably find a good condition 1Gawd for 2500 add 2k in mods and you're going pretty damm fast on a car that mopst people would still consider "streetable"

I know it doesn't have anything to do with the thread, but I couldn't help myself(former F-Body owner). My bone-stock 95 formula LT1 6sp ran 14.0 at LA county raceway, and my 97 formula 6spd ran 11.52@94 mph(1000ft) at a track here in Arkansas. The LS1s are closer to low 13s stock with a good set of tires. So they are not going to be that easy to beat. BUT I would get the DSM if I were you, they are alot of fun, and you can't beat a turbo in the long run.

Re: Performance levels/money

Anyone can buy a fast car with a v8. But its another thing to make a 4cyl run 11s (like Kevin)!!! Its so much more pleasing to know that your 4cyl is as fast as some v8's, or even faster!

THAT is why I own an eclipse now instead of an F-Body.

Re: Performance levels/money

F bodys running 13s is typical. But the point was that with ~1500 in mods you can put an AWD 2g in the 12s. On race gas of course. A 1g can do it for even less. I saw a 92 talon with a 190 pump, hacked MAS, MBC and exhaust run 12.6 or 12.7. Maybe 800 in mods? Not to say that a DSM is better or more moddable than a F body, just that it doesnt take a whole lot of cash to level the playing field. And its not as easy as this post makes it sound either of course. It took me some time to get to the 12s, mostly waiting to make the money for the parts though. SOme poeple never even get thier DSM into the 13s, so in this case the F body (example) is superior. Etc And there is also more to it than just drag numbers. Both cars have very different personalities, and that can weigh heavily on the decision.
