1998, cooling fans...

One of the two cooling fan motors went on my mother's '98 Windstar. The one on the passenger side began to smoke and the fan wouldn't turn. I know I'll end up replacing the fan motor, but I'm just wondering what the purpose of it is. I unplugged that fan so it doesn't attempt to start up and smoke, but the other fan works perfect. The guy at the Ford dealership says the one on the passenger side is for the A/C and it will only come on when the A/C is on, but I don't believe it. It was at least -30 outside when this began happening, and the A/C hasn't been used in about six months.

The one fan will do for winter, but I know it won't be sufficient when it starts to warm up outside. Is the second fan really for the A/C? It's just the passenger side fan that doesn't work.

I am not sure if the second fan is ONLY for the A/C, but I can tell you that the A/C will operate in the winter if the HVAC controls are in the DEF position, so it is definately possible that that fan was running (commanded on).
