Upgraded audio
Ive seen one brouchure that said it was a HK, but one brochure also said floormats are standard, tilt down mirror. To answer your question, the upgraded carver is much better than the HK upgrade in a 3-series (ive had 5). Subs behind seats, directional mounted tweeters at the side mirror level
Ive upgraded the stereo in almost all my cars before (spending $2k-$3k), I wont be doing anything to the Z4, very good IMO |

I wondered the same thing. I was under the impression the upgraded sound system was a HK, but my sales guy told me it's either an Alpine (most likely) or Blaunkpunket (or whatever it's called). The Carver Technology is simply the ability to have it autoadjust the volume with engine noise. It's a pretty good system, but I would've preferred HK, unless someone can convince me that the Alpine is better by showing specs.

sound system
check the BMW website, but I own a Z4 3.0 with the upograded sound system, the CD changer and the navigation system (thank god the whole country is now on one DVD instead of 6 CDs), and i believe the premium sound system is Harmon Kardon WITH Carver technology for auto adjusting the volume. It works great and my teenage daughter has recently certified, using her music, that I have sufficient bass. That means fillings actually fall out when the right note is played.

Well, I hope you're right about it being a HK. I like to have a lot of bass, but I'm worried about blowing my speakers when I'm driving at fast speeds (because the volume adjusts). So, I turn down the bass by 2 notches to play it safe, but I'm wondering if it is ok to put the bass all the way up. Do you know if this is dangerous to the system?

Z4 sound system
I have had my Z4 in to Fields BMW in Winter Park 6 times for attempts to get the premium sound system to work properly. I keep loosing the bass. When I first got the car, the bass was very loud. Now it is very weak. Anyone have this problem?

carver is a high end stereo manufacturer that is significantly better than any HK system, and a welcome upgrade. the amplifier in the z4 is carver, and it performs beautifully. it makes the HK system sound like a transistor radio. the two subwoofers and the additional 8 speakers in the small z4 cabin don't hurt much either.

2 10" subs in the trunk
Hi guys, I got 2 10" Alpine Type-R's in my trunk a couple months ago. The guys had to drill a porthole through the compartment near the armrest, the one that folds down. So, whenever you want real bass, you have to lower this, but its no big deal. Its worth it, it sounds really good. I went to aout 5 shops in Los Angeles, and 4 of them said it couldn't be done, but one offered this suggestion. Worked for me!
I've still got room to lay a set of golf clubs comfortably in the back. ![]() Clayton |

Re: Z4 sound system
Does anybody know where to find a copy of the BMW audio system manual (hopefully PDF) for the system with Carver technology that is in the Z4 3.0 ?
