Went to get my car inspected today and ending up paying for a rejection. My exhaust is putting out too much HC and CO, here's what ir reads....
------------ME-------NORM HC(ppm)---529--------220 CO(%)-----9.19-------1.2 Now I don't know if this will make a diff, but after the inspection I switched from my 90-93 teg ecu to the 88-89 teg ecu. Will this clear anything up? If not what will? Keep in mind I have a ZC.... |

Re: Need help passing emissions
you are running rich. thats what the high hydrocarbon level and high carbon monoxide mean. i would think that the 88-89 teg ECU wouldnt have as high of a fuel map as the 90-91 teg ECU, being that one is a 1.6 liter D-series and the other is a 1.8 liter B series.
if i were you, i would make sure that all of your ignition system is in tip top shape too. using either the older teg ECU or the d16a6 ECU will probably give you a leaner mixture, but i wouldnt just slap the ECU in it and go spend more money on another inspection. BTW, do you have a catalytic converter? i know that seems like a dumb question, but some people punch out the cat and leave it on to try and fool the emission inspectors. no cat (or a punched out one) will give you higher hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide readings as well.

Re: Need help passing emissions
thanks for the input. Do you think an MSD ignition system would help? Also, i do have a cat, its a high-flow cat, but its always passed before....
Anyone else have any ideas? |

Re: Need help passing emissions
here is a real simple solution to your running rich problems..
go on ebay and buy a b&m fuel pressure regulator and gauge. They usually cost about $85 dollars shipped for both. Adjust your fuel real low down like 20 psi or so. That will definitely lean it out. get new plugs at least....if you want get some good proven wires like ngk blue's... the msd is not necessary. you can get a replacement 02 sensor as well for $11 at autoblown. also, definitely use the pm6 ecu if you can borrow one or at least the pg7. The PR4 will definitely make you run rich. these are all VERY cheap solutions...i would start with the new plugs and pm6 ecu first.
