"boing" spring sound occassionally heard

Hi,
Recently my 2001 Sienna has started to make a "boing" sound like a spring or something is recoiling back into place. The sound comes from the back end by the cargo area.
I Never noticed anything from new until now. It's not often, but just once and a while.
It even has happened twice when driving straight down a paved road.

Anyone out there know what I am talking about or who have the same problem? I will be getting it checked out but would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,
Tim

Re:

We have a 2002 Sienna and it does the same thing. Very weird when you hear it. It sounds like some kind of metal cable or thin rod being "plucked"---"BOING"

It happens to us every couple of months. It can be on a straight-away or a turn. It just makes that noise on the driver's side of the van and it seems to be under or around the sliding door.

No idea what it is.!

We had the same problem with our 1999 Sienna. The problem is with the rear springs, and the Toyota dealer fixed the problem while the Sienna was still under the new car warranty by adding rubber pads to the rear springs. We had taken the Sienna to the dealer numerous times, but the dealer was never able to duplicate the problem. Finally, the service representative attended a Toyota seminar where the problem and a fix were identified. After the rubber pads were added, the "boing" never happened again.
