Turbo question

Sup guys, im not sure if this has been talked about or not, but if it has my bad. Anyway i have noticed that on alot of high performance import drag cars they leave their turbos open to the air, like no filter no nothing, some have custom molded hoods and you can see their turbos intake poking right out there! Im like wtf? wouldn't the smallest piece of tire, a rock, or maybe a big ass bug (lol) get in their and hurt somethin? I mean the filters we use on are cars are made to filter out the smallest particles it can to deliver clean air to the engine. So whats so special about these guys? can we run open turbos? that would be tight as hell!! Peace,

Re: Turbo question

There is a guy a few blocks from me with an MX6 that was turbo'd
I had him pop the hood for me and I looked around at the BAD weld slags on the exhuast manifold and then I noticed the turbo had a screen over the inlet...
I asked him if he had any problems with the car..
He says.."my rings are goin bad and burnin oil"
I say nothing and chuckle cause he has done a big no no for a daily driver... dust+cylinderwall=scratches and wear
For a strip run it opens up the flow greatly but other than that I wouldn't do it.....

Re: Turbo question

but it would still be a nice sight to see a eclipse with that kinda welding. It would be nice to see a person who has that kinda car that has a turbo just sticking out there for air. lol

Re: Turbo question

Why don't we see any Eclipses/Talons dragging most of the time?? I have only seen one and it was the 90-92 body style. They are definatley not that common at all. It seems odd to me, seeing as they are so strong.

I know right, i was at the strip couple months back all i see is couple supras ( 9 sec supras=damn!!) a couple srt4 neons and a maybe 2 or three evos, only one gst who knew what the hell he was dong 12 sec not to shabby. Im like where the dsms? It woulda been easy pickins since other then the cars i mentioned would have been no problem for a good dsm. Everybody else just spun their tires while a gsx would either leave them sitting at the line or spin all 4, sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gst might spin but stomp um anyway, lol, dsms rule!!!!!

Re: Turbo question

To answer the question, which has been discussed before: Obviously you get better airflow when you don't have an intake pipe and filter. First, they CAN do this without a MAS in the intake because some cars have different forms of airflow measurement. Maft, VPC, EMS... etc. Second, a drag car only has to go 1/4 mile on a clean track. Tracks don't have rocks, and people who can afford a $50,000 drag car aren't worried about dust on their cylinder walls.
