RX7 2nd gen t2 or 87 nissan 300zx
I own a 87 nissan 300zx non turbo and always wanted to buy an rx7 2nd gen but I've heard that there are a lot of problems with it. Should I sale my 300zx and get a 2nd gen rx7?

Re: RX7 2nd gen t2 or 87 nissan 300zx
depends how you get it. if you get an FC that was not taken care off it wont last. i would suggest to start with an N/A to get the hang of a rotary, and if you like it so much sell it and then get a T2.
For info on buying an RX7 please look at the FAQ thread

just do lots of research before you buy one they normally last a fair while if you do everything correctly but if you do everything wrong dont expect it to last long it will last long enough.

Re: RX7 2nd gen t2 or 87 nissan 300zx
I have had both turbo RX-7s and 300ZXs. All 4 of the 300ZXs I have owned had all been extremely reliable. However, the RX-7 is so much more fun to drive. I don't think the RX-7 deserves the bad rap it gets, but then again, all my cars have been stock. I have never had an RX-7 die on me while I had it (I have had 12 now), but I have bought plenty with dying/blown engines cheap because so many mechanics/shops won't work on them. However, these cars either run great or don't. I love the T-Tops and torque of the Z, but the high revving, super handling FC is definitely worth owning! If the compression is good and it doesn't overheat, I would recommend an RX-7, especially a turbo 2.

I'd definitely go for the RX-7, hands down. You'll have a lot more fun driving it than a 300ZX.
Don't worry about the missing power steering, either. It took me only a few hours to transfer the unit from a junker when I had my 86 N/A.

i have an 88 anniversary rx7 and i stand by rx7 100 percent. it has 50/50 weight ratio and u can easily modify it to 300+hp. some people have bad luck with them(so i hear) but if u have to replace a motor, u are lookin at bout 2,000 for a rebuilt, compared to 3500+ for a nissan. cheap parts and unbeatable design.

Thanks a whole bunch for all of you who reply. I'm greatly apreciated. I will get an RX7. I only concern about it because a lot of people are scaring me with engine problems. A guy who work with me wanted my 300zx. I thought about just giving to him for $1500 but I might ask for a little more. Thanks again everyone.

Wellll, it all depends on how hard you drive it. If you be stupid with it and just rip it up every single time then you'll have a problem. It's hard to stay disciplined in an rx7 because you always want to get into high rpm to hear the little bird call noise at the end, but sometimes you just gotta stay disciplined and shift early. Change our oil out every 3000 miles or so, and if you have a turbo get a heat wrap to cool the turbo. If you just straight up redline every single time and downshift too early, then you will probably run into alot of problems, but if you learn how to drive it lightly to the trip to the grocery store, you should be ok. Oh yeah, its a great idea to have your own mechanic who knows alot about rotaries. Kinda relieves your stress alittle when you know you have a good rotary mechanic behind your back.

Re: RX7 2nd gen t2 or 87 nissan 300zx
Wow Gringo, your like me, I have owned 16 RX-7's...Another birthday this month too, I am OLD! ha ha...
I have also owned 2 -300 ZX's, they are made for different types of tastes, the Z is a cruiser...Nice to drive on a spring/summer drive with the T-Tops off...More of a luxury drive...More comfy perhaps... But the RX-7's are so much lighter & more nimble. I have always prefered this type of car... I always laugh when I hear of people having problems with them or saying they aren't reliable...THEY USE OIL...By design...So check it alot until you get the feeling how much it uses and how long it takes...They also create alot of heat, make sure the coolant is changed every 3 years at least. However, the 2nd Gens are getting old now, so it might be a great idea to get a compression test done first, to see what life the engine has left in it... They are very easy to maintain...Change the plugs & fluids...You never have to worry about T-belts going and wrecking your engine, like in the Z cars... Test drive alot of them & see what you like. Good luck/skill! |
