black smoke

ive been having black smoke coming out of my muffler for some time now i was just wandering what it could be from. i thought it might be a bad o2 sensor making my car run too rich or something but i installed a new one and its doing the same thing. when i took the old one out there was black carbon shit all over it. anybody now whats wrong? and if i installed a new 02 sensor do i have to like reset the ecu or something?

Re: black smoke

reset your ecu... pull hazard and ecu fuses from under hood fuse box for 30 seconds, put back in and start car and let idle without touching anything. Let idle for at least 5 min., cut off car, then start it again and drive it.

My car has always done the same damn thing since I've had it. I am sure it could also be my o2 but I dont think thats the prob. I've never had an o2 sensor code come up on my ecu cept for when I installed my mpfi recently but taht went away after I timed the car correctly. What I want to know is if there's a way to adjust my a/f so its not running rich without buying some expensive electronics that is.
