engine reving up by it's self
i have a 88 honda civic hatchback. sometimes it starts to rev up by itself. without me even touching the gas. it doesn't do it all the time. but when it does if i turn my car off it will not start for awhile. i'll try to start it but it it will not. then i smell gas. i had a complete tune up before i drove down to texas from oregon. also what is the ecu. what is this code stuff i've been reading about? do i have the light that blinks under the carpet on the pass side floor board. thanks to any info ya'll can give. i don't really know to much about cars.

Re: engine reving up by it's self
probably a vaccum leak or you throttle body is sticking open try spraying some carb cleaner on inside the throttle body break the buildup loose

Re: engine reving up by it's self
Could the revving be the tranny? I'm not sure on that one.
As for the car not starting for a while that could possibly be the main relay. It's a common problem especially when the car is hot. I don't know a lot about the ecu but I'll try to explain what I think it is. ;-) The ECU is the engine control unit. It's a computer in your car that helps manage the car's functions like your coolant temp and fuel injectors and it reads all the different sensors in your car. It's reading tons of data all the time. Looking at the ECU in your car can tell you what's wrong with it, try reading the "4th Gen FAQ - If you are new, please read before posting" threads. Post # 5 tells u what what the codes are. You'll have to look under the passenger carpet and see how many flashes it has. Hope I helped a little! If you do a search on the board I think there's more posts about how to read the ecu codes. |

i don't think it is the tranny. it's a 4 speed maunual. the check engine light comes on everytime i drive. do all 88-91 honda civic have the ecu light thing under the pass floorboard?

Re: engine reving up by it's self
definetly not the tranny, thats the dumbest thing i've ever heard.
How high does it rev? Does it rev up and down and up and down, or does it just rev high and stay there?

Re: engine reving up by it's self
hey be nice, just because he's not right doesn't mean its the dumbest thing ever - leave those comments to urself
does sound like a vaccum leak, and the ecu is definitely throwing some codes maybe the engine gets flooded with gas? dont know if that only happens on carbed engines..

and for the reving, possible vaccum leak, could be the electronic air control valve, or stuck throttle body, for the no start, that might be ur main relay Good Luck

Re: engine reving up by it's self
it's all good. the only thing i'll correct is that i'm not a he.
my hubby had a camaro once (an automatic) and when the tranny started to go, it started trying to go into higher gears by itself so i took a stab in the dark and guessed the tranny. sorry! |

Re: engine reving up by it's self
when the tranny in my probe died it would shift at random and if i gave it alot of gas it would upshift and downshift over and over really quickly and kinda buck.
