power loss???

I own a 1987 chevy 305ci throttle body on a V10 pickup (aka 1/2 ton) 4x4.

I am getting frequent power loss and recovery at around 45 to 55 miles per hour seem something to do with the fuel injection any one with ideas. the tranny only has three gears no overdrive but if it had overdrive it would feel as though the O.D. was kicking in and out if you know what I mean.

I have to find a scanner to read the check engine light that I am getting but in the mean time if anyone has any ideas that would be appreciated thanks in advance!!!

the service engine soon light is not coming in at the same time the engine loss of power but seams to have its own timing.

This only started to occur after I had the truck in the shop to do the bearings on the front and they replace the oil sensor and belts (its 30 below here at the moment or I'd have done it myself) now the above is happening and there is a vibration at my feet at around 65 miles per hour?? Damn garage, don't trust any of them.

Need to fix so I can sell it and move on to a duramax for trailering

Re: power loss???

If the "power loss" you are talking about is a hesitation or surge, and it is during crusing speeds, my first guess is your EGR valve. The EGR valve operates under around 50% throttle, and if the diaphragm is shot, it will attempt to operate, but will cause a power loss and a sort of surging motion. Otherwise, make sure the basics are covered: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter.
As far as reading codes, you can do it yourself an save a decent amount of money. Check out

I appreciate the help thank you. yes it is a surging motion. The code that is thrown comes in and out while I drive are the code still stored or do I have to drive untill the code is thrown and repeate the paperclip trick

By the way code 13 came in with the paperclip with the engine off.

O2 sensor circuit.... would that cause the surge??

If This works I owe you a bottle, lol

Even if the sevice engine light is coming in seperate from the surging / power loss.....I did get a code 13. would the o2 sensor create this surging once the sensor is hot.....open loop until it is hot enough to read (I have a single wire o2 sensor) and then kicks in and out???? open loop after it fails causing power loss. I am just theorizing in my non mechanical brain here.

It is a cooincidence that the oil sending switch is right beside the conector for the O2 sensor. the oil sending switch was replaced at the shop two weeks ago when all my problems started.

Re: power loss???

VinW,
It is possible that they hit the 02 sensor or caused a bad connection. How does it look? Is the connection good and clean?

Has is it ever been replaced?

Re: power loss???

The O2 sensor could definately cause the surging problem. Look into the possibility of it being hit, or damaged from something else.

I've owned it for three years and don't know if it has been replaced....the sensor itself looks in good shape from the visual, it is still clean! the connection looks intact but the wire goes up through a plastic protection conduit along with the oil pressure sender wire and I am having a hell of a time inspecting sure would be nice to have a lift kit on the truck. another 6" and a set of 33's would make easy tinkering!

Out of curiousity would a code reader tell me any more about this code than what the jumper trick is allready telling me?

Re: power loss???

There are code readers and there are scan tools. A code reader will do the same as the jumper trick (for OBDI). A scan tool can actually show what the sensors are reporting to the ECM. The fact that you are getting a Code 13 indicates that the sensor is reporting an out of range value (or the circuit is bad). See http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/ for more details.
