Front end pop and click when turning
My wife's Crown front end pops when turning the wheel. It especially makes a horific noise when it is turned almost all the way...pop pop pop pop. I thought maybe it was tierods but I am old school and don't even know if there are tie rods on this car. The front end is aligned and stays in alignment which kind of rules the tie rods out to me. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Front end pop and click when turning
This is completely normal.
It is casued by the steering stops rubbing on the control arm. If you apply some grease to the stop pads, the noise will go away (or at least diminish). |

Thanks, at least it isn't an expensive fix...for once.

Mine does the exact same thing too....normally only left turns..and if your on any kind of uneven surface....it is a far worse noise! Modmech, thanks again, I honestly thought that was going to be an expensive fix too...

Re: Front end pop and click when turning
How about squeeking noises, like when going straight over speed bumps or pulling in/out of driveways, sound like kids jumping on a old matress uder the hood.

Re: Front end pop and click when turning
Squeeks are usually just old dried out bushings. Not going to hurt anything unless they are loose.

Re: Front end pop and click when turning
I looked for the stop pads but can not find them. They also are not in my Haynes manual. Can anyone tell me where they are?
Thanks |

another thing you might want to check are youre ball joints. they will do the same thing .

How do you test your ball joints?

you can do a visual inspection first. look at your balljoints to see if the rubber grommet is cracked or busted. if it is it dirt will get in and eat away at the bearing. second put your car up in the air and support it with jack stands. check for any loose play in the wheel assymbly. grab the wheel at the top and bottom. push in and out to check for any play. there are some instances when you will not find any play what so ever. if not then get a friend to slowly turn the wheel while you try and pinpoint the noise. just remember to always use jackstands. never get underneath a vehicle if it not supported.
