Sentenced to, death by LS1

Cliffs below!

It’s 7:30pm and my dad should be arriving at the airport soon. I slid into the car and turn on the seat warmer, cracked the window and off I go. It’s a cool night and after rain today the roads have finally dried up. I take I-80 West towards San Francisco, about 10 or 15 minutes I see a CTS only a couple cars ahead. Excited and curious to see if it’s a V model, I speed up a bit to get a glance at the badge. I pull up and take a look, but nope, just a normal CTS being driven by an old man. Kind of disappointed I speed up and that’s when I notice it.

An ’04 GTO still with the dealer plates. I inch up to see who is driving it, a middle aged man and his wife, cruising along at 80mph. After a few moments of checking out his car, I give it some throttle to try and provoke him. Sure enough, he hits it and lets off almost as fast as he started to go. So we line up and find myself playing catch up as he gets the jump. One car…two cars, and he lets off due to traffic up ahead. Rinse a repeat on more time.

“Fast car,” I tell myself. Both knowing who would win, he kind of returns to normal speed and my exit is coming up, so I get out of the fast lane and prepare to exit. With only about a mile until my exit, I see Mr. GTO come up on the left. Hmm, I notice most of the traffic in our way before is also taking the exit and it’s a clear road for quite a while. I ask myself “Play with GTO or pick my up dad?” I think for a second and merge into the middle lane just as he passes me up. I match his speed for look over at him and his wife. With nothing but open road in front of us, guess what happened?

He hits it and once again I’m playing catch up, as if it would matter. The auto tranny downs to second, and a few seconds after that, it glides into 3rd, losing good ground. By the top of 3rd, about 120mph he was at least a bus length ahead, probably a little more. I shut it down and pull up next to him to give him the thumbs up. He smiles and I back down to a good speed as I’m low on gas. He must have missed his exit like me, because we both got off at the next one and turned around to get back on the freeway. Maybe he wanted to go again or thought I was following him, but he takes off up the on ramp and that’s the last I see of him.

At first I thought it was an ’05 GTO, but with the LS2 rated at 400hp I thought it was kind of slow. Looked at some pictures on the internet and found out it was an ’04. Oh well, still fun.

Cliff notes: Roasted by an ’04 GTO

what year Lightning? Gen 2 I take it. If its a 99-00 the GTO wins. But any newer Lightnings and its a good race.

A newer Lightning will take down an 04 GTO. The Lightning will run 13's all day. An 04 GTO will never break 14.

Stock Lightnings are probably a "little" overrated by most. Sure, there good for 13s in some parts of the country, but around here I've only seen them in the low 14s. I guess most of the guys I've met at the track can't drive?

But slap on a pulley, intake, and tune and that truck is a BAD MOFO. Too bad the L is getting the axe. I love the competition!!!

Yeah it is a shame the lightning is going away, but did you see what was taking it's place? The Roush F-150 is badass! I think i actually like it better, has a tougher look to it. If you haven't seen it yet, catch powerblock on spike tv tomorrow and you'll be able to see it on the trucks! show.

That Roush looks sweet, but its infact slower then my 11 almost 12 year old gen 1 Lightning. Unless the dude on Trucks some how got it go a ton faster then in the other review i saw on Speed. The one thing I like about the new Roush is it kinda has the same boxyness as my gen 1.

Becuase it is powered by an LS1, and everyone knows that an LS1 will never break 13 seconds. It can end world hunger, bring about peace to all amn, and kill Godzilla...but never go faster than 14.00000

*I have much respect for the LS1, the above is Sarcasam, and every LS1ed car I've seen in real life is in the 12s somwhere, at least.

I run in the 13's. Not sure where right now though, haven't been able to run since the cam install. Oh, I run at 5800 feet above sea level.

Re: Sentenced to, death by LS1

Very nice...I wanna run in the 13s. All the LS1ed cars I've seen at the track (not sure of Kenendales elevation) run with Superchargers or nitrous, most of them run a mid 12. I'll tell ya, I'm not a huge fan of domestics, but if I had one, it would definately be a SS or WS6...

I love the gen 1 lightnings! I have two buds that both have red ones, and they just look mean and run great stock. I looked into the Roush, but the fact still remains that this truck is just TOO heavy! They need to put the new Ford trucks on a serious diet if they plan on staying with a performance based truck. I saw that the new Harley truck wasn't going to be supercharged either. It will now be rated at a whopping 300hp. Looks like they're de-balling it as well.
