is marriage an obsolete concept?

With the church playing an ever diminishing role in public life, and laws covering marital property rights now being extended to cover common-law and same-sex relationships, and the spiralling divorce rate, marriage as a 'normal' behaviour pattern seems to be increasingly endangered....will it reach the point where it just becomes a novelty?

Personnally, I don't see myself getting married again. The first was very bad and I don't want to relive it. I have some really good friends and of them only one is happily married and retired. My married friend and his wife have a very happy relationship and laugh together all the time. I can be who I am with my other friends and we all have a good laugh together.

It depends...you will always have the few couples who are committed to each other, work together, and communicate well to each other, keeping the relationship intact.

I think some things that are ruining what marriage should be are:

1. lack of communication
2. financial problems
3. issues of past and letting go (i.e. growing up in a broken family)
4. infidelity
5. inability to forgive when mistakes are made
6. religious clashing - when the partners come from different religious backgrounds.

I can probably think of a hundred other things, but these are the big ones that stick out in my mind.

I think marriage is only as good as what it means to YOU. If you have strong feelings about the virues of marriage then anybody else's opinion is meaningless.

Personally I hold marriage in high regard but my marriage will be free of any religious meaning. I see it as a sacred bond.

Marriage is important to me and i see it as almost a rite of passage into a new life shared with someone who is your best friend and lover.
but i don't feel that marriage is very sacred among many people. I used to work for a couple who had been together for almost 15 years but never got married. they might as well be but they just don't see a need to celebrate their love through a ritual.
I go both ways on the issue i guess. i think that in the future you will not so much be married but will have a life partner (like in same sex marriages).
the morei think about it the more i go back and forth between what i want for myself and what will most likely end up happening (marriage becomeing obsolete)

I can't see myself ever getting married... I wouldn't want to be "stuck" with someone my whole life...

There is the whole divorce thing, but even if you do get a divorce, they still get to take your stuff and all that...

I agree with steel....moving to mars that is , but marriage is actually something that is definently going to wind up gone.

There will always be marriages, just it'll become something of a whole new concept.

The two poeple that get married muct believe in it's original foundings for it to actually mean anything...but if just one person does, well your f****d

I have come to call myself the "White Minority." My parents are and have always been married for the last 30-some years (no, I don't know exactly how long--another story).

I pray that one day my marriage will mean something to me and my lover such that he and I both share a solid, natural relationship "for as long as we both shall live."
