I have a 1996 Plymouth Neon Higline/Expresso. I want to change the fule filter. I bought a new fuelfilter from Advanced Auto parts and today when I jacked up my car to change the fuel filter the one that I have on my car does not look like the fuel filter that I bought. The fuel filter on my car has 2 hoses instead of three hoses. I searched via the web and no luck.I took the fuel filter I bought back to Advance Auto and person behind the counter and I did a search in their database for the type of fuel filter that I have on my car and we could not find one. Can anyone help me out.
Thanks in advance. Lindsay Hammett |

I believe the fuel filter is in the tank.To change that fuel filter you have replace the whole fuel pump.Chryslers have a fuel system without a return line, yours probally has the returnless system. There is a way to tell, pop the hood and should have one gas line going to the fuel injector rail

Re: Fuel Filter
from 96 and on dodge does not use real fuel filters. they have a "sock" like device over the fuel pump that prevents large chunks of crud from getting sucked up and pumped into your motor. you can buy a replacement "sock" but its very rare for these to get fully clogged.
if you ask me, its the dumbest thing ever. i ran into a fuel issue in my srt4, and dodge was forced to replace my injectors because they were cloggged. if they had installed a filter, my injectors would have never had to be replaced. i will be actually installing a filter one of these days. |

OK, I just replaced my daughters fuel filter on her 96 sport, it had 3 lines and is located off the tank under a steel panel...I would start searching for your third line, feel around on top of the tank and look towards the front on the tank, it sounds like someone changed it out and possibly broke off one of the lines and just didn't follow through and fix it correctly...good luck...

Re: Fuel Filter
Connfused? - I've read the prior responses (LOL).
You can thank Chrysler for this one. The 95 Neon (original design) used a fuel filter with 3 hoses off it. At some point in the future the car was redesigned with a different gas tank, a shield was added over the fuel filter, and the fuel filter was changed to only have two hoses. By your description, and from a previous poster's, it sounds like these changes were not done in the same year's production. Some factories were still putting in the older parts. I know there are other parts on the car which have two seperate part numbers (clutch and clutch cable for one). It depending on what factory the car was made at as to what parts went into the car. If you have the VIN number of the car, the correct part can be deturmined. The VIN infomation contains the factory id the car was made at. Auto Zone (or other parts suplliers), may have only one part listed for a particular year. They still probably have part you need listed under a different year. The Chrysler parts dept will get you the correct part (becuase they knoe of the multiple listings) but most likely will ask you for the VIN so as to get you the correct one (at a substancially marked up dealer price). Now specific to your problem - Are you sure your car is a 96 and not a 95? There are online sites that show how to decode a VIN. I strongly suspect that the fuel filter for a 95 (I bought one of these at Autozone recently) is the one you want because it will have three hoses. You gotta love Chrysler. |

Re: Re: Fuel Filter
Thank you. I will look at the VIN number today and go to a neon siste and decode the VIN. I will let you know what I come up with.
