308D Timing Chain problems
I've just had the timing chain replaced on my 1989 308D. I have now got an engine that sounds like an old bus (about 4 times as noisy as it was before) and has much less power than it did - it really doesn't want to go over about 60mph. My mechanic (who sadly seems to know very little about diesels) doesn't know why this would be. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: 308D Timing Chain problems
I'm guessing you have a 380sd. You need to replace the timing chain tensioner when you replace the chain (unless it's new). It might be assembled wrong or it's not pumping up correctly. as far as your lack of power goes, fix the t-chain rattle first, if the lack of power is still there(I don't think a loose chain will cause a lack of power like your talking about) I would look at the possibility of the chain not being installed properly, maybe he got the cam turned one tooth.

Re: 308D Timing Chain problems
the 308 was that large truck/van thing right?
what engine is in it? (I remember the 309 had a 617 5cyl I think) or if you dont know what engine is in it, what other year/model more common MB had the engine that you have in it? |
