2000 Sunfire 2.2L engine potential problems
Bought a 2000 Sunfire last night, has a 2.2L engine. Was told this morning that they're notorius for blowing the head gasket at 100,000 miles.
Any truth to this? If so, where can I research further information? Thanks in advance for the help...Art |

Re: 2000 Sunfire 2.2L engine potential problems
I haven't heard anything bad about them.
I know dodges 2.0L engine usually craps its pants and blows its head gasket around 100,000km. I wouldn't wory about it. |

Re: 2000 Sunfire 2.2L engine potential problems
Hope that's true. Looked through all the posts, only saw one where the head gasket issue came up. Had to replace a 1995 Neon head and gasket at 89,000 a couple of years back, expensive lesson. Thanks for the input...Art

You should get way more than that.
I have a 2.4 in my 98 Sunfire GT and I have just under 130000km's on it.

Re: 2000 Sunfire 2.2L engine potential problems
I've never heard of that happening, mine has more than 100,000 on it, my brother's is closer to 150, and a few friends are past 150, their only problems were water pumps

I think the '95-96 2.2 is more prone to failure. In '97 or '98 GM changed the head gasket and valve cover design on those engines and now they hold up a lot better.

The 2.2l engines do have timing chain problems, timing chain breaks. In the 1997 and down 2.2l engines, the timing chain breaks and the valve bend imedeintly.I have seen that happen.the 1998 and up 2.2l engines when the timing breaks, does not bend valves and I have not figured that out yet.
