S15 Engine Fit
The engine from the S-15 will fit. You'll need the transmission and the rear end. To mount the transmission in your car you'll have to do a little reshaping to the tranmission tunnel. You need the rear end because of the speed sensor that's located in the rear. You need the S-15 ECU or an ECU that has a S-15 map loaded. And depending on the suspension mods, you might need a new drive shaft. Just make sure you have a S-15 drive shaft also.
The S-15 engine is the best base starting point, but it's also the most expensive starting point. The S-14 engine is cheaper and it's easy to get a T-28 turbo (new or replacement) to replace the stock turbo if the engine you get doesn't have a T-28 turbo installed. The 5-speed transmission from the S-14 doesn't require modifications in order for it to be installed.

a 6th gear would be nice to have, but not at all important. So you guys are leaning towards the s14 sr....
this engine will fit, is there any reshaping of the engine bay to get it in? and is a new tranny required? and lastly will this engine pass emissions in southern california? |

Turbo makes me emo!

well heres the deal with the S15 tranny.
it sucks. its a 6 speed basically stuffed in the gearbox of the s14 5 speed, therefore the gears are thinner and cant handle as much power, or thats what i've learned over the years. like logik said, if you really want a s15 sr20, just get the s14 then find a s15 turbo, it'll be a hell of alot cheaper. i dont live in cali myself, but i think no sr20s period will pass emission, sorry. you can always down here to good ol Texas tho

Re: s15 sr20det
They've been nown to hold 450hp so their not that weak, but the 5-speed is much stronger. Anyways, to me, the S15 SR is just not worth it.

Re: s15 sr20det
All the sr20s, ka, ca and with modifications RB fit into the same engine bay. But for S15 you also need a new driveshaft, and a speed sensor which is located in the rear end in S15 s, so you basicly need the whole rear end with axels and all, if you want to have a proper swap.
or just get a custom driveshaft and do something about the speed sensor.

ok the S15 to install can get pricey and the engine is alot
personally the S13 or S14 would be better, the S13 doesn't have the VVT of the S14s or S15s but they still can produce good power with proper mods and engines fitting in the bay I've seen a few V8 swaps lol in california no SR would pass smog, from what i hear even if you can somehow make the emissions pass the visual test would never work |

Re: s15 sr20det
ive heard bad things about the 6 speed dont a lot of people w/ s15's swap it to 5 speed? and a s14 swap would remedy ur transmission problems because it comes w/ the tranny but u wont pass smog in cali will u and u wont pass the visual either

If you want to remain fairly stock Id go with an S14 SR, Power FC, Exhaust, Intake, Intercooler, 550 Injectors, and a Fuel Pump. that setup will get you close to 280 Wheel. after that a T28ish Turbo and you'll be putting out at least 350whp |

Re: s15 sr20det
but the blacktop s14 sr20s come stock with a garrett T28 TO4B...and its already ballbearing...what is the point of upgrading to another T28 size turbo?

Not many S14s have the Ball Bearing Turbos. The S15 Spec R (from what I understand only the Spec R S15 has them) has them and its good to about 320whp. The only way to be certain its BB (short of spinning it) is the divider between the wastegate and Exhaust ports. Regaurdless I left It vauge by saying "T28ish" and there are quite a few sizes of the T28. So I guess if he was gonna go over 320whp Id say go with an appropriatly sized Tomei / Apexi Turbo. (just cuz I like IHI for some reason ) |
