Re: automatic to manual ???

If you just dont like it because it feels slow (autos arent really slower than manuals) then get a corvette 1-2 servo, and/or a B&M or TransGo shift kit..
that will make a HUGE difference in the feel of the car..the tranny will shift harder and faster.. All for about $130.. Both parts, if your reasonably inclined, can be installed yourself.. and there are 1000 websites on installing them..

If you really wanna go standard, You could go with a t-5, If $$ is a factor and you want something thats gonna bolt-on.. If your engine isnt too highly modified, the T5 is a decent tranny..

Or you could go with a T56 out of the 4th gen Camaro.. Lots of guys have done it.. More money, fabrication, etc. involved..

Re: automatic to manual ???

the t5 is a weaker tranny than a t-56 adn the t-56 is a 6 speed not a 5. its a stonger one n the t5 wont last long if u mod. the engine much...the t-56 would run aboiut 2000 ish if u dont do the work..i believe dont qutoe me i dont kno about the servo kit

Re: automatic to manual ???

vete servo and the shift kit go on your auto, no clutch or anything. T5 is a whole 5-speed transmission.

Re: automatic to manual ???

My 89 IROC has the 700R4, so did my RS, and i never had any complaints. Then my IROC tranny crapped out, the 3-4 clutchpacks disintegrated and i needed a rebuild. Here is what i had my transmission guy do at the shop.
-B&M trans kit, setup to stage II shift levels.
-Corvette 1st-2nd Servo
-2600rpm stall converter with kevlar lockup clutch.

I can honestly say, after driving the car with the new tranny, it scared the shit out of me. I peeled out of a road in Drive, with my hand on the lever, when it shifted into second, i jerked back so hard i pulled the shifter back into first. Remember an automatic when properly built will always be faster than a manual, thats why they use them in most drag racing, because they are faster. Also a torque converter multiplys torque by as much as 2x off the line. it only lasts for a short time, but is a great benifit when launching off the line. this is an advantage that manual trannys dont have.

One mod i havent done yet, but is on my list, is a B&M Mega shifter. Its a ratchet shifter that fits right into the stock console.

Re: automatic to manual ???

access to a vehicle lift makes installing the Servo 100X easier.. There are also many websites that detail installing the Corvette servo.. Its a simple enough task for your average DIY mechanic..

Many websites go into detail about installing a servo, there are also quite a few that sell the corvette servo.. (or if you really want, you could get a Billet servo which is even better than the corvette servo) You should also be able to get the parts from a GM dealer..

http://sethirdgen.org/servo.htm

That might help you out installing the servo..

Also, make sure your rear end is up to the task.. Your shifts will be hitting a lot harder, and faster and that strain will transfer through to the rear end..

Re: automatic to manual ???

his is older with the 700R4.. The servos are much more conservative with driveability and comfort in mind..
